No matter how well made, all electronics will eventually experience trouble one day. Until about a decade ago, however, general manufacturers of precision machinery and home electronics were not very proactive toward addressing issues with their products. Unlike products manufactured for corporate clients whose sales price included the cost for urgent repairs or maintenance work, manufacturers never considered the same pricing scheme for home electronics due to the cutthroat price competition in the marketplace.
As such, whenever consumers sent in a product to be repaired they had to wait an excruciating amount of time for it to be returned. If the consumer brought the product directly into the manufacturer's repair center, though, that was a different story. Yet, most consumers don't live near enough the repair center just to drop by. As a result, generally, the product was brought into the distributor where it was purchased from, and then it was sent off to the manufacturer for repair and sent back to the distributor for pick up. This meant that it was commonplace to have to wait upwards of 10 days for the product to be sent off, repaired and sent back.
As a means to changing this practice, in 1998 Canon MJ partnered with the Yamato Group to become the first in the industry to launch a pick-up repair service. It called this service Takuhai Mentenansu ("door-to-door delivery repair"). As mentioned before, most consumers live too far from a Canon MJ service center to simply drop off a product for repair, and so this wasn't a realistic option. Thus, Canon MJ decided to partner with the Yamato Group to offer a solution that makes it possible for the product to be picked up directly from the consumer's home.
The Haya-Mente service was essentially born from the marketing strategy of implementing a solution where the manufacturer offers a speedier repair service option that enhances customer satisfaction and directly leads to repeat customers.
